PURPOSE: The ideal toward which one strives. It is intangible and ongoing.
GOAL: A goal is a statement of ones desire, a dream that one is committed and willing to have; it is a stated result one is committed to achieving and to supporting with time, energy, and/or money; it is a predefined result expected within a specified period of time.
GLEAM: A gleam is a desire that one is not willing to devote time, energy or money to achieve.
COMMITMENT: A commitment is a guarantee, pledge or promise.
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.
`Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.'" (Goethe) From: The Scottish Himalayan Expedition by W.H. Murray
CREATING GOALS: In order to set goals, we must first know what we want out of our life. We must notice what we are doing, where we are, whom we are with, and how we are being when we are most happy. When these questions are carefully and truthfully answered, we can set the course of our lives.
Answering these questions will help you select goals for your life:
- What do I want in my life that I don't have?
- What do I have in my life that I don't want?
- What would motivate me to excellent performance?
- Do I love what I now do? What do I love to do? How can I make a living doing that?
- How do I wish to be?
- How and where do I wish to live?
- What do I wish to change in me (my body, space, and possessions), my relationships with my God, my family, and my friends?
- What reputation do I choose to have?
- What positive difference would I like to make?

What makes some people successful? Talents and abilities are important, but knowing what we want is equally important. When we know what we want, we can direct our energy and make choices toward the attainment of our specific goals. Attaining goals brings the setting of new goals, thus producing an on-going cycle of positive growth and achievement.
ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE: Thinking positive and being positive can overcome the worst of situations. We can learn to live our lives in a productive positive manner by setting goals in writing. This solidifies them and gives us a concrete way of watching and experiencing them as they are met. Marking this progress and achievement becomes personally rewarding. It also builds strength, character and self-esteem.
In setting goals we also list ways of achieving these goals. The plans for meeting goals are called objectives. In other words, objectives are measurable steps we take to reach our goals.
NAME POWER: There is power in our names! Our names are our most valuable possession . We carry them around all of our lives, and they live on after we are gone. We make many choices throughout our lives and attach many things to our names. Our reputations are a culmination of our virtues, beliefs, actions, etc. and are all contained in our name. Others know us by our names.
For example, someone may say, "Do you know Tony Brown?" Another replies, "yes I do." Many things come to mind about Tony's personality as his name is brought to mind. Learn to hold your name high and attach only positive attributes to it! Set your goals to insure the reputation you desire.
PURPOSE: An example of a life long goal = PURPOSE.
To keep my name powerful and positive.
- Tell the truth to others and myself.
- Keep my commitments to others and myself.

GOAL SETTING: When setting goals, be specific. State the goal exactly as desired and visualize its completion. Write it as if already completed with dates and measurable results, such as: "I weigh (desired weight) by (date)". Then write your objectives to reach the goal, such as: A. Begin special diet. B. Jog two miles every other day. C. Join a support group.
Pursuing goals is a method of consciously creating ones future. The way you are at 85 years old begins now with the setting of your goals. Review them every day of your life. Do it while you brush your teeth, when you go to bed and upon awakening in the morning. Visualize --see yourself each day being, doing and having exactly what you want!
