In addition to an everyday skin care regiment, a facial should be done periodically. It can provide further cleansing and nourishing of the skin, and it can relax the facial muscles, helping to rid the face of tension and, perhaps, inevitable wrinkles from the skin. There are many types of facials available to you. You can have a professional (in-salon) facial or you can give yourself a facial at home. In either case, the actual massaging, done with the fingers manipulating the face muscles, causes the muscles to relax and also stimulates circulation of blood to the skin. The sensations, following a facial, can be very pleasant, making your skin "tingle" and "glow". Consider having a professional facial three or four times each year--for the luxury of it--but give yourself a facial at home once a week.

EVERYDAY SKIN CARE -- once in the morning and again before bed:

  1. Cleanse skin with a cleanser--wipe or rinse.
  2. Apply or splash on freshener or astringent--wipe or rinse.
  3. Blot with soft towel--keep skin slightly moist--don't rub!
  4. Moisturize by massaging lotion or cream into the skin--always work from center of the face toward the jaw and hairlines.

SHORT FACIAL -- maybe several times a week--if you have the time:

  1. Cleanse (as above), leave the cleanser on for several minutes.
  2. Shower in warm water and dry off--take care to blot the face. Rest with the feet elevated.
  3. Apply freshener or astringent--wipe or rinse off.
  4. Blot skin, but don't completely dry off--"palm" the face with water if it isn't very moist.
  5. Moisturize the same as above.

FULL FACIAL -- this could take 30 to 40 minutes:

  1. Apply cleanser, taking time to massage the skin. Leave cleanser on for a few minutes and wipe or rinse off.
  2. Apply scrub with fingers. Leave on (usually 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the type of scrub). Rinse off with warm water.
  3. Apply masque with fingers or brush. Leave on--again depending on the type of product--usually 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
  4. Take a very warm shower or bath.
  5. Blot the skin of the face.
  6. Apply the freshener or astringent and then wipe or rinse off.
  7. Blot the skin--carefully!
  8. Apply moisturizer.
  9. Rest with feet elevated--for best results do this facial at night just before bed.
