Purpose and Benefits
The ABC was created with the coordination of efforts by a school and its community to collect gifts and services to give to students, teachers and administrators for perfect attendance. The Industry Education Council's Adopt a School Committee in partnership with La Belle Foundation and the Santa Barbara and Goleta Chambers of Commerce were the first sponsors of ABC with goals of:
- Rewarding students and teachers with recognition and incentives for attending all their classes on time and for the entire day, every day for a year or more.
- Enhancing school attendance, student grade point averages and self-esteem.
- Enabling businesses and the community to demonstrate their support for students and teachers by providing gifts and services. (Businesses and communities that support students and teachers thrive with continued customers and good citizens.)
- Training future employees in (accountability) the importance of showing up on time every day.
- Decreasing dropouts, delinquency and truancy.
- Recognizing students who may never be acknowledged for academics or athletics for doing their job--going to school.
- Demonstrating the power of personal responsibility in health care. (Students and teachers who take responsibility for their health care are more likely to stay healthy.)
