Sales Representative Guidelines

  1. Visit the businesses in the morning. Avoid busy times. Ask to speak to the owner or manager.

  2. Go to the businesses that you frequent. Mention that you are a regular customer and that you want to support the small businesses in your area. They want to keep your business and most want to support students.

  3. Carry the Perfect Attendance forms with you. The best time to ask for donations is when you are making a purchase.

On the envelope that holds the forms, write down the business, what they donated and the value of the donation. When someone asks, "What have others donated", it is very impressive to see the list. They will see that the donations range from a $500.00 bicycle to a $50.00 skate board, or a $15.00 T shirt. Suggest that items from sales racks be donated. When the form is filled in, the store gets credit for the full price of the item.

  4. When you ask for a donation and the owner mentions how hard things are right now, be sympathetic. Ask if it would be all right for you to come back at a later date and when that would be. Not all businesses will promise a future donation, but many will donate if you return.

When an owner or manager tells you to come back at a later date, ask for a business card. On the back write the date to return, the donation to be given and ask them to sign the card. This way you can usually count on their donation and it "refreshes" their memory.

  5. Be very specific in describing the service or product on the donation form. Be sure that the student can get a complete item or service and will not need to add any money of their own.

Remind businesses that the prize or service may not be given until June. If the gift has an expiration date, suggest a three month leeway or until the end of the calendar year.

If the gift certificate is a barber shop or beauty salon or other business that offers a service, write "Tip is included" on the gift certificate. Also write the person's name offering the service, the telephone number and whether an appointment is necessary.

  6. It is very important that the store is acknowledged for their donation. A written thank you should always be sent with a copy of the donation form for their tax files. Mention how you appreciated their donation the next time you shop there so owners/managers are happy to have given and will want to help you in the future.
