Fact Sheet
BACKGROUND: (History) In July of 1993, individuals from four local organizations were involved in the formation of the Media Committee. The groups were: La Belle Outreach Foundation, Leadership Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce and the Santa Barbara Industry Education Council.
WHO: (Members) Committed individuals desiring educational and behavioral change attend the Madia Committee.
WHAT: (Mission) A passionately motivated committee to acknowledge and assist the media in becoming a positive educator of the public.
WHY: (Philosophy) We watch more TV and see more movies than we read, study or experience life. More often than not, we see a world that is violent, irresponsible, dishonest, corrupt, immoral, apathetic, unkind, sarcastic, rude, negative and depressed. We are training each other and especially our children, through the media, to be anti-social, dysfunctional people living in communities that are becoming increasingly dangerous.
We choose to be peaceful, responsible, honest, upright, moral, concerned, kind, respectful, mannerly, positive, and excited about life and its possibilities. We think it is imperative that the media reflect a BALANCE in their coverage rather than dwell pathologically on undesirable values and negative reports.
We believe that an informed, deeply concerned, passionate, personally and socially responsible citizenry can assist in bringing about changes that will teach all ages the values that create productive, responsible, peaceful people, with compassion, tolerance and a desire to be the best that they can be.
HOW: (Process) At a monthly meeting, we acknowledge individuals for outstanding work in media and create ideas and actions to assist all media in the positive education of the public.
WHEN: The last Tuesday of each month from 12:00 to 1:00 or 1:30 P.M. (depending on the number of participants) at the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce Board Room.* We do not meet the months of July, August or December.
