Media, will you help us?
These ideas have been gathered since July of 1993 by the Media Committee of Santa Barbara. In our use of the term "Media," we refer to radio, television, movies and print. Our goal is to acknowledge and assist the media in becoming positive educators of the public.
- Be active in your local Media Committee.
- Learn how to watch, read, listen to all media to distinguish the positive educators from the negative.
- Be selective in what you watch, read, and listen.
- Tell others of the positive media you have discovered.
- Call, write, fax your views and opinions--WHAT YOU LIKE AND WANT MORE OF.
- Be respectful. Write letters to the editor respectfully; letters that state your opinion without maligning, blaming or implicating others?
- Every time you see or hear of an heroic deed, an act of courage or kindness, get the facts and notify the media.
- Avoid spending time or money on violent movies, one-sided periodicals or negative programming.
- Support products that carry a nonviolent logo and stations that endorse nonviolent programming.
- Support organizations that teach media literacy (The Center for Media Literacy).
- Enjoy the Discovery Channel and Public Broadcasting.
- Create a committee to set guidelines for professional campaigning that focuses on issues, respect, civility and having the winner outshine rather than outslime?
- Thank at least one person in the Media each month for their positive or educational contribution.
- Take action if ypu feel passionately about positive and educational media. Be innovative and do whatever you can do.
- Inform the Media Committee of Santa Barbara of ideas, suggestions and solutions to assist the media in becoming a positive educator of the public. MCSB@selfesteem.org or fax 682-6839
