Chartres, France: The Labyrinth
|
This year gave us as almost as many miracles as there were days. Relax we’ll only tell you one of them. A friend insisted we read a book about labyrinths, Walking a Sacred Path by Lauren Artress (a women who was responsible for bringing the Labyrinth to San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral). Reading the book we learned that an historic labyrinth still remained in Chartres, France. We delighted my friend when we told her that we were going to Paris the following month and would take a day trip to Chartres to see and walk the labyrinth.
It was a gray day in May when we took the train to the Cathedral. We were disappointed to learn that we could not take the "sacred path" until 6 PM. Stan suggested that we have a long lunch to pass the time. We inquired about the nicest restaurant in the small town and were directed to the main hotel across the square. The meal was course after course of tasty delicacies.
When an attractive couple speaking English walked by our table, we stopped them asking, "Where are you from? You’re speaking a language we haven’t heard all day!" The woman laughed saying, "Why we’re from San Francisco, what are you doing here?" Betty explained we had read an interesting book about the Chartres Cathedral and its labyrinth and had come to walk it. With a smile, Lauren Artress said, "Oh yes, that would be the book I wrote."
We wish you many miracles for the Holidays and 2001,
Betty and Stan
