When I was 25, I opened a "Professional Training School" and a "Model/Talent Agency". One of my first students was a forty year old woman, who seemed ancient to me, as she was in my mother's age group. Eleanor had never done anything for herself. She had let herself become unattractive and old beyond her years. By enrolling in a self-development course, she had committed to make some changes.
Our course began with instruction in proper carriage and continued with good nutrition, exercise, grooming, clothes selection, make-up, public speaking, etc. We taught the students to present themselves professionally, to perform to their best ability and to express their natural personality. Eleanor blossomed. Her sad, tired demeanor changed into an alert, interested and curious disposition. She exchanged her vintage hair style and make-up with up-to-date fashion. She even bought some new clothes selecting those that would flatter her figure and bring color and contrast to her skin and hair.
Toward the end of the course, Eleanor pulled me aside at the end of the class. With stars in her eyes she said, "Betty, guess what?" Not having any idea what she was up to, I replied simply, "What, Eleanor?" As giddy as a teenager, she could hardly control her exhilaration as she squealed, "My husband has invited me to lunch!"
My face obviously showed the confusion I felt. I was only able to eke out, "Uh...well, oh, that's really nice, Eleanor." Her face dropped. Her response was serious and direct. "Betty, you don't understand. My husband hasn't invited me to lunch in twenty years!"
This story illustrates the effectiveness of change and the ability for anyone at any age to make the changes they choose to make. I used it to encourage older men and women, to let them know that it is never to late to make positive changes in your life.
