Daisy Cleveland (Betty's Mom) |
When I was in the first grade living in the deep South, my parents and I went to get a "Crystal hamburger" after the movies. A little boy, younger than I, was selling newspapers to the customers and asked my dad if he would like one. Dad said, "Nope, I've already read it."
"What about your wife?" the boy persisted, "Would she like one?"
My dad laughed and joked; "Oh, she can't read!"
Immediately, with sparkling dark eyes, the youngster shot back, "Well, put one in her back pocket, and maybe she won't look so dumb!"
Taken by surprise, we laughed 'till we hurt. It was a quick, positive, and clever response to the 'no' he had received. My dad was impressed. He bought the paper.
A brassy, quick response gave us insight into the clever, intelligent, spirit that obviously supported a mere child.
